Saving the donuts

The name of my animation is “Saving the donuts.” Around the time we were assigned this project, the joker movie was about to come out. My boyfriend kept talking on how excited he was to watch it, so superheroes and villains were definitely on my mind. The story of my animation is of about a superhero who helps a woman get her donuts before she has to go to work because she got up late (these being my two main characters). It lasts around 45-47 seconds and includes text, sound and obviously, animations with movement. I would say that the most important element of my animation is the comedy aspect, with the help of the vectors, conversation between characters, and the music.

DESIGN

To start my animation I created the title and end slides on photoshop. I created several layers with different tones of blue and then used red, black and white to create the action/text shape (yellow for the text). Some things that took more time  were creating the polka dots for the letters and changing the thickness of the outline of the letters to make it look dramatic, yet easy to read, and lastly, a little shadow for the letters.

It ended up looking like this:

Title screen
Bam screen
Final screen

After that I added them into the animate timeline, each for around 4-5 seconds.

Step 1: ASSETS

background template

It ended up looking like this:After that, I got the assets for my story. These consisted of a hero, a girl, a room, a landscape of the city, and a donuts shop. Finding the images was very easy, I used manly vecteezy. I believe the different backgrounds I used were a really important element to my animation, to make it more interesting. I tried to use very different colors: really bright ones for the intro and closure, more standard, easy to observe ones for the bedroom and donuts shop, and a very romantic tone of colors for the city background. I edited some of the colors of these backgrounds in illustrator, as well as the letters for the donuts shop (because it was originally a coffee shop!). I didn’t draw any of the assets myself (because I’m awful at drawing) but I did try to give everything my own touch (title which I did from scratch, change the colors or expression of faces of the characters, etc.) Additionally, the typeface I used was called “Death Rattle” which I got from dafont.com.

Step 2: ANIMATE

Superhero in motion (created in animate)

I moved all the assets to adobe animate by creating different layers and creating key frames and motion tweens. I used the effects of zoom in, camera effect, used motion presets, a movie clip symbol with nested timeline, and lastly, a GIF. The hardest part was definitely the movie clip because I couldn’t figure out how to do the nested timeline on the superhero flying or running. For that reason, I only added one to my animation and proceeded to create a GIF for the running scene.

Step 3: MUSIC

THIS WAS MY FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE PART!

I tried to add the audio to animate, but if we are being honest, I hated it!!! So, I decided to finish my animation and then import it to Premiere (software that I had learned to use last semester for another class!). I pretty much mastered premiere so it was really really easy to to the audio part there. I downloaded sound effects from many different sites like audioblocks and and Freesound. However, most of them I got from youtube and changed them into an MP3. The music that I add on the flying and BAM scene are my favorites because they just make it funny and more interesting!!!

Step 4: WATCH, WATCH, WATCH, AND EXPORT!

Some of the problems I encountered were A) movie clip B) music on animate C) GIF!!

As I mentioned above, I struggled a little with the nested clip and the tweens, so I just went with basic motion tweens and a gif. Even though I found some struggles in this project I believe it was great to get my mind into thinking how else I can solve these, not necessarily with the animate software. I used different softwares and websites like illustrator and photoshop as well as youtube, vecteezy, etc. With a mix of different elements I was able to create a simple, yet funny and entertaining animation.

If i could redo this animation I would change many things, just because I was able to learn from my mistakes. The storyboard would be a must,  just like in this project… It helped me remember the different scenes I wanted to include and calculate possible times and effects I would use on each. Then, I would get all my assets before I start with titles or the animations. This time I did title first and had this crazy idea of what I wanted to do. but didn’t necessarily find everything I needed. For that reason, getting the assets first would be a great idea. Lastly, I would try to enjoy it more!!! out of all the things we have done this semester, this definitely has been my favorite, and who knows? maybe ill use this skill again in one of my future jobs, just like I did with the skills learned in my web design class!
